Conceptual artist Ignasi Aballí subverts traditional pictorial practices in painting, photography, and video to explore new and unorthodox methods of artistic production. “I had to find other solutions, other ways to carry on,” he has said, “because those offered by painting, pictures as I understood them then, were finished as far as I was concerned.” Aballí has famously painted with sunlight and dust, removing the artist’s hand from the process and blurring the lines between painting and the photogram. His other works include Lists (1997-2005), a series of seemingly arbitrary accumulations of statistics and mantras, and Waste (2001), an installation of pots of paint and primer. His explanation of the latter, that “the paint has dried while I am thinking about what to do with it,” exemplifies the irreverence and joking sensibility that pervades Aballí’s practice.

Pabellón de España 59 Bienal de Venecia

Corrección es el proyecto que el artista Ignasi Aballí (Barcelona, 1958) presenta para el Pabellón de España en la 59a Exposición Internacional de Arte - La Biennale di Venezia bajo el comisariado de Bea Espejo.

La propuesta de Aballí está compuesta por dos acciones: una intervención arquitectónica a escala 1:1 del pabellón y la edición de 6 guías. Ambas acciones han sido concebidas con la idea de corregir los aparentes errores en los que ha recalado el artista durante su investigación en torno a la fisonomía del pabellón y de la ciudad de Venecia. Con la primera, Aballí corrige la disposición del edificio español realizando en su estructura un giro de diez grados, permitiéndole, de este modo, alinearse con los pabellones próximos en los Giardini. La segunda acción, por su parte, le permite corregir la idea generalmente aceptada de qué es una guía turística de la ciudad italiana.
